The New York Rangers' offseason moves have certainly kept fans and analysts alike on their toes, with a flurry of activity that has left some players in the shadows. Among these overlooked players are Matt Rempe, Juuso Parssinen, Scott Morrow, and Urho Vaakanainen, each bringing their own unique set of skills and challenges to the table. These players, despite their potential, have not received the same level of attention as their more prominent counterparts, such as the highly touted Pavel Dorofeyev and Alberts Smits.
Matt Rempe: Last summer, Rempe was a rising star, with his hard work and progress towards becoming an NHL regular documented on social media. However, this summer has been quieter, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Rempe's focus on his game and his determination to be a more complete hockey player have not gone unnoticed by coach Mike Sullivan, who trusted him as a fourth-line regular throughout the preseason and the first nine games of the regular season. His impact, especially on the forecheck, was evident until a thumb injury sidelined him. Despite some setbacks, Rempe's potential remains, and he'll have the opportunity to re-establish himself in the bottom six during training camp.
Juuso Parssinen: Parssinen's last season was a struggle, starting as an extra forward on the Rangers' roster but eventually being demoted to Hartford of the American Hockey League due to limited ice time and a lack of trust from Sullivan. Injuries further derailed his progress in the minors, and he played just 15 games there. Recalled by the Rangers after the Olympic break, Parssinen saw limited ice time and didn't record a point, finishing the season with just three points in 20 games. At 25 years old, with NHL experience and the ability to play both center and on the wing, Parssinen could be a candidate to replace Jonny Brodzinski, but he'll need to win the trust of the coaching staff to secure a spot in the bottom six.
Scott Morrow: Once considered the No. 2 prospect in the Rangers organization, Morrow's star has dimmed slightly. Acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes in the K'Andre Miller trade, he was expected to be an offense-first right-shot defenseman, a role that Sullivan had long desired. However, Morrow didn't distinguish himself as a must-have in the lineup, and his lack of trust from Sullivan was evident when he wasn't even given the top power-play unit quarterback role. With the Rangers' defense corps now set with Fox, Durzi, and Braden Schneider, Morrow could start out in Hartford again. A bounce-back season could vault him back into the NHL, but a trade of Schneider remains a possibility.
Urho Vaakanainen: Vaakanainen's journey with the Rangers has been a rollercoaster. Initially, he was a key player, making the Opening Night lineup and playing in the first seven games. However, he lost his spot in the top-six defense corps and was replaced by rookie Matthew Robertson. Vaakanainen's trust in the lineup was further diminished, and he finished the season with six assists in 20 games. Despite his decent performance with Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Championship, Vaakanainen's future with the Rangers is uncertain. The addition of Pettersson and the potential of Robertson and Smits make Vaakanainen an overlooked option, but he could surprise and reclaim a bottom-pair role in training camp.
